Plaintiffs filed an action against Clearspring Technologies Inc., an online content sharing company, Quantcast Corp, an online tracking firm, and other websites. The lawsuit targeted "cookies," which are tiny text files put on users' web browsers when they visit websites. They are used by companies to make profiles of users' interests for advertising purposes.

PLAINTIFFS' CONTENTIONS:
Plaintiffs argued that defendants utilized online-tracking tools absent required user knowledge.
Result
The parties reached a settlement whereby defendants agreed to stop using flash cookies to store users' web actions absent proper disclosure, except if the activity is in connection to Adobe System Inc.'s Flash program, which is utilized in relation to online videos. Defendants Clearspring and Quantcast agreed to pay $2.4 million.
