(Quinn, Emanuel, Urquhart & Sullivan LLP)

Facts

Wind driven brush fires that burned more than 200,000 acres and destroyed more than 1,500 homes in San Diego were allegedly due to sparking power lines that San Diego Gas & Electric Co. maintained. The County sought to recover for damage to County property and for costs incurred responding to the fire emergency.

Result

Without admitting fault, SD G&E agreed to pay $24.5 million to San Diego County in relation to the devastating 2007 fire. $15 million will go to the general fund and $9.5 million to a fund that will provide fire protection.
