Plaintiff Paula Steuer, 78, worked as a substitute teacher for the South San Francisco Unified School District. She sued the district for age discrimination and perceived disability discrimination following her termination.

Contentions

PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS:
Plaintiff contended that she had continuously worked as a substitute teacher for defendant since the 1990s and that she was fired due to her age and because of the perception that she was too frail to work as a teacher.

DEFENDANT'S CONTENTIONS:
Defendant contended that plaintiff was not fired due to her age or a perceived disability but due to complaints made over several years that she fell asleep at her desk and was unable to control students in her classroom.

Result

The jury returned a defense verdict.
