Facts

Angelo Bottoni, Paul Roberts, and Tracie Serrano filed a class action against SLM Corp. and Sallie Mae Inc. alleging violation of California Civil Code Section 1671, the Consumers Legal Remedies Act, Unfair Competition Law, breach of contract, and seeking declaratory relief. The complaint concerned the defendants' allegedly unlawful practice in collecting student loan debts. Student loan borrowers accused the loan giant of unlawfully slapping a 25 percent collection cost fee onto defaulted loans.

Result

Sallie Mae agreed to settle the matter for $76 million.
