Plaintiff Lucy Johnsen owned a home in the Strand Section of Manhattan Beach. Her downslope neighbor, defendant Mohamad Chahini, demolished the existing residence, excavated the soils and constructed a new home. The excavation of the downslope property during construction destabilized the upslope property, resulting in structural damage to the Johnsen residence.
