Facts

Jeff Doyle served as the Twin Rivers Unified School District facilities director. While in that position, he allegedly learned of misappropriation of District funds and improper relationships between District officials and several outside consultants. He reported the issues to no avail. He was later placed on paid leave in 2011 following "an incident with an employee" and the District's investigations. Doyle filed this instant lawsuit against the District and several individuals alleging retaliation, civil rights violation, age discrimination and harassment, failure to prevent harassment and discrimination, defamation, whistleblower violations, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The lawsuit named former Superintendent Frank Porter, former Assistant Superintendent of Facilities Services Alan Colombo, Associate Superintendent for Human Resources Patty Smart, and Associate Superintendent for Business Services Rob Ball as defendants.

Contentions

PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS:
Plaintiff contended that top district officials retaliated against him after he reported misspending, improper relationships, and projects being awarded to contractors without going through the public bidding process. Among his allegations included individuals receiving money under the table or kickbacks, favoring certain consultants, and even authorizing illegal background checks of students.

Result

The parties agreed to settle the lawsuit for $400,00, half of which the School District would pay with the insurance pool of local districts paying the rest.
