Facts
A class consisting of 104, predominantly African-American, individuals alleged their homes were unlawfully searched by City of Oakland police officers. They sued the city. The city fired four officers in connection with the case.
Contentions
PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS:
The class claimed their homes were searched pursuant to warrants by obtained after the officers provided false information to judges, including lies about drug tests that were not actually taken.
DEFENDANT'S CONTENTIONS:
The City admitted that some of the officers were less experienced and improperly trained and that the affidavits on which the warrants were based had procedural errors.
Result
The parties settled for $6 million, $4.5 million of which was paid by the City's insurance carrier.
