Facts

The Environmental Defense Center brought a complaint for declaratory and injunctive relief against multiple federal defendants relating to the issuance of 51 permits for fracking off the coast of California, for use in oil and gas production.

Contentions

PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS:
The EDC contended that the issuance of the permits violated the National Environmental Policy Act.

Result

Pursuant to the settlement reached between the parties, federal regulators will place a moratorium on the issuance of fracking permits while they investigate their potential environmental impacts through a "programmatic environmental assessment" of fracking operations in Pacific waters.
