Facts

The Federal Trade Commission brought a complaint against software company Oracle Corporation relating to its Java Platform, Standard Edition.

Contentions

COMPLAINANT'S CONTENTIONS:
The FTC contended that Oracle violated Section 5 of the FTC Act by deceiving consumers about the security provided by updates to Java Standard Edition, which it knew was vulnerable to hackers.

Result

Pursuant to the consent order, Oracle must provide consumers the ability to uninstall insecure, older versions of Java Standard Edition easily. The company is also prohibited from making further deceptive statements to consumers regarding the privacy or security of its software.
