Plaintiffs Donetta Hughes and her minor daughter leased a space in an apartment building located at 7052 Remmet Avenue, Canoga Park. Defendants Yale Management Services, Inc., Martin and Tobi Schneider, ITF M&R Properties, and Richard Kaufman owned or maintained the building.

Contentions

PLAINTIFFS' CONTENTIONS:
Plaintiffs contended that there was no heater installed in their apartment and that as a result, her minor daughter fell ill. Plaintiffs also claimed other defects, including mold and mildew in the bathroom as well as plumbing and electrical problems. Complaints were made but no there was no responsive action.

DEFENDANTS' CONTENTIONS:
Defendants claimed that plaintiffs' unit was meant for storage purposes and that plaintiff had unlawfully converted the space into a residence.
