Facts

Andy Tran suffered from an onset of adult schizophrenia. He had never been known for carrying weapons or being violent. One day, his parents called 911 for help as Tran was struggling with a bout of schizophrenia in his front yard. He was not armed or threatening anyone. When officer Daniel Karschamroon arrived, Tran obeyed his orders and was handcuffed. Karschamroon was prepared to take him to a hospital when another officer, Richard Gendreau, arrived. Gendreau fired his Taser gun at Tran, causing him to fall to the ground. Tran died.

The Garden Grove Police Department reported that Tran had been a violent individual with a drug arrest. They claimed he had been breaking into a residence and when he failed to comply with orders, the officers had used reasonable force to subdue him.

Tran's family filed suit against Garden Grove, noting contradictions in Gendreau's use-of-force explanations and relying on a coroner's report.

Result

The parties settled for $1,300,000.
