Facts

Environmental advocacy group, Baykeeper, sued the City of South Francisco over sewage spills. Baykeeper claimed that over one third of sewage spills statewide occurred in the Bay Area.

Result

The parties agreed to a settlement by launching efforts to reduce sewage spills. The city will try to reduce its spill rate by half in a five year period. The settlement also included a $300,000 program that the city would pay that would help homeowners replace leaking sewer lines and contribute $150,000 toward water-quality improvement projects.
