Plaintiff alleged that Los Angeles Police Department officers beat him in front of his apartment building. Plaintiff alleged that the attack was unprovoked. Plaintiff sued the city alleging violation of his civil rights in the use of excessive force.

The city denied plaintiff's allegations, and asserted various affirmative defenses.
