Facts

Mario Patrick, Harold Phillips, Victor Dial, Charlotte Hagos, David Bomer, Joseph Barrett, Dennis Wildy, and Donald Taylor worked as police officers for the Office of Public Safety, which was a division of the City of Los Angeles Department of General Services. In 2002, the Office of Public Safety hired Gary Newton as chief of the agency. Subsequently, the plaintiff police officers, who are African American, sued the city for discrimination based on race.

Contentions

PLAINTIFFS' CONTENTIONS:
The plaintiffs alleged that Newton instituted a policy of refusing to give promotions to African American employees, wrongfully terminated them, and retaliated against them for filing charges under the Fair Employment and Housing Act. In addition, Hagos asserted that the defendant discriminated against her due to her gender.

Result

The court awarded the plaintiffs Mario Patrick, David Bonner, and Dennis Wildy $1,288,592. Attorney fees of $314,620 and costs were also awarded.
