Facts
Twelve African American students who attended schools New Haven Unified School District sued the Union City school district alleging that school officials failed to protect them from racial harassment and violence. Plaintiffs claimed that the district ignored their complaints regarding members of a mostly Latino gang were coming onto campuses and attacking African American students. The complaint cited the death of a student in 2007, Vernon Eddins, who was shot to death on the steps of a middle school.
Result
Without acknowledging any wrongdoing, the school district agreed to settle the matter for $725,000.
