Crescenta Valley Water District (CVWD) filed suit against multiple defendants, including the gas companies Chevron and Shell.

Contentions

PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS:
CVWD argued that its well and groundwater supply had been contaminated, and that the gas companies were responsible for that contamination. They asserted causes of action for negligence, nuisance, and trespass, as well as strict liability claims for design defect and failure to warn.

Damages

CVWD sought damages of $39 million.

Result

CVWD settled with Shell Oil Company for $4.5 million; Chevron U.S.A. Inc. for $1.1 million.
