Case number: SCV20328 Verdict –  $1,100,000

Court

Placer Superior

Plaintiff

Mary-Alice Coleman
(Law Office of Mary-Alice Coleman PC)

Facts

Plaintiff Jennifer Scott was the director of the Rocklin campus of Phoenix Schools, Inc. for 12 years. A parent complained when Scott did not immediately enroll his two-year-old child, and plaintiff suggested the parent return in two weeks when she anticipated full staffing in the room. California laws limit the number of children who can be supervised by teachers and teacher aides, and the Rocklin Phoenix School would have been out of ratio and subject to citation by the California Department of Social Services. Upon receipt of the complaint, Scott was immediately terminated. Defendant maintained that Scott was not fired for not breaking state laws. She brought suit for wrongful termination.

Result

The jury awarded plaintiff $1,850,000 ($1.1 general damages; $750,000 punitive damages).
