Facts
Plaintiff Majeda Nasrawi worked at defendant San Diego Community College District for over seventeen years. In January 2004, plaintiff was on special assignment working part time with defendant Armando Abina, who was the dean of the School of Math and Engineering. Abina was training plaintiff to become an associate dean. In June 2004, plaintiff moved to a full-time position under the supervision of Abina.
Contentions
PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS:
The plaintiff contended that Abina subjected her to unwanted sexual advances. She wrote him a letter asking him to stop and immediately he began to commit retaliatory actions against plaintiff for her complaints. The plaintiff claimed she was then transferred from her position and assigned to another position in a different part of campus. The plaintiff alleged sexual harassment and retaliation.
DEFENDANT'S CONTENTIONS:
The defendant denied plaintiff's allegations.
Settlement Discussions
The defendant offered $10,000 and plaintiff demanded $180,000.
Damages
The plaintiff sought $313,666 in economic damages.
Injuries
The plaintiff claimed she suffered from emotional distress, anxiety, depression, and exacerbation of post-traumatic stress syndrome.
Result
The jury found though plaintiff was subjected to unwanted and harassing conduct it was not severe enough for a reasonable woman to have considered the work environment hostile or abusive. The jury also found that defendant had not retaliated against plaintiff for her complaints.
