Facts
Seven Jane Doe plaintiffs, all minors, sued the Visalia Unified School District and Antonio Cordova through their respective Guardians ad Litem.
Contentions
PLAINTIFFS' CONTENTIONS:
Plaintiffs were all minors who attended Oak Grove Elementary School within defendant school district between 2010 and Feb. 25, 2013. Plaintiffs alleged that the school janitor, defendant Cordova, sexually assaulted them. Plaintiffs accused the school district of failing to investigate, report suspicions of, or prevent the multiple incidents of Cordova's sexual assault on students.
DEFENDANTS' CONTENTIONS:
The school district denied having any knowledge of Cordova's conduct.
Injuries
The students claimed they suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of the assault, and continued, and will continue, to experience emotional distress and other symptoms in the future.
Result
The school district agreed to settle the dispute for $5 million with the help of a mediator. Cordova, meanwhile, had criminal charges pending against him.
