Facts

An 88-year-old woman was hit by a right-turning bus as she crossed the street. The decedent
was a 12-year volunteer at the Fred C. Nelles Youth Correctional Facility in Whittier. As she was
leaving the facility one afternoon after her volunteer shift ended, she was hit by a full-sized
correctional facility bus that also was leaving. The bus struck and killed her as it made a right
turn while exiting the facility and as she was crossing the street. The decedent was survived by
eight adult children ranging in age from 49 to 69. Two of the children live in the Philipines.

Settlement Discussions

The defendant offered $40,000 by way of CCP Section 998
