Court

Attorneys

Plaintiff

Paul N. Sorrell

John H. Laveley Jr.

Facts

Plaintiff singer-actress Jennifer Lopez brought suit against defendant ex-husband Ojani Noa, 31, over his plans to publish a book "The Unknown Truth: A Passionate Portrait of a Serial Thriller." The book alleged that Lopez had affairs during her marriage to Noa, and various other allegations about her family.

Lopez claimed the plans to publish the book violated the terms of their nondisclosure agreement they had reached in a previous settlement and sued for breach of contract.

Settlement Discussions

According to plaintiff, defendant offered not to publish the book if Lopez paid him $5 million.

Result

The arbitrator awarded Lopez approximately $545,000 ($200,000 for breach of contract damages, $300,000 in attorneys' fees and $48,000 in arbitration costs). Lopez was also awarded a permanent injunction barring Noa from disclosing private information regarding their relationship, and was also directed not to sell or disseminate a manuscript of the book.
