Contentions
PLAINTIFFS' CONTENTIONS:
Plaintiffs contended that the Lieutenant in charge of the police station where they worked issued an order banning all personnel from speaking Spanish in the workplace. They claimed that this policy violated the law. Furthermore, they were subjected to a hostile work environment due to their national origin and alleged that the complete prohibition on speaking Spanish constituted harassment. They claimed that the policy was discriminatory and that they were retaliated against for speaking out against the policy.
They sued the city for harassment, hostile work environment, discrimination, and retaliation.
DEFENDANT'S CONTENTIONS:
The City of Los Angeles denied plaintiffs' allegations and asserted various affirmative defenses.
Result
Plaintiffs settled with the city for $2.5 million.
