Facts

A class of seniors resided at a residential care facility for the elderly in Pasadena. In 2007, the owner of the property sold the property and all the residents were required to move. None of the residents received any relocation compensation payments.

Contentions

PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS:
Residents of the Pasadena Manor alleged they were entitled to relocation benefits pursuant to a Pasadena City Ordinance.

DEFENDANT'S CONTENTIONS:
Defendants claimed that the local ordinance did not apply, or, if it did, it was pre-empted by State law.

Result

The case settled at mediation for $300,000 ($100,000 for fees and costs; $200,000 for 69 seniors who filed a claim).
