Facts
Plaintiff Rosa Raso sued Anita Wong, Jerry Wong, and Alice Wong, in connection with a motor vehicle accident.
Contentions
PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS:
Plaintiff claimed she was driving along the I-110 freeway when she was rear-ended by a vehicle operated by Anita. Plaintiff suffered injuries as a result, and sued Anita and her parents, Jerry and Alice, who were the registered co-owners of the vehicle. Plaintiff alleged that Anita was negligent, and that her parents were vicariously liable for her negligence.
DEFENDANTS' CONTENTIONS:
Defendants disputed the extent of plaintiff's injuries, claiming that the impact would not have caused the injuries she claimed. They also questioned the medical care she obtained, arguing it was unnecessary.
Damages
Raso requested $217,000 for past medical expenses, $450,000 for future medical expenses, $1,080 in stipulated past lost earnings, and an unspecified amount for pain and suffering.
Injuries
Raso sustained sprains and strains to her neck and back, which she treated with chiropractic and orthopedic care, as well as epidural shots. She later underwent a discectomy and a partial vertebrectomy.
Result
The parties reached a $485,000 mediated settlement.
