Court

San Joaquin Superior

Attorneys

Plaintiff

Mary-Alice Coleman
(Law Office of Mary-Alice Coleman PC)

Defendant

Velma K. Lim

Facts

Plaintiff Aida Pizano filed a wrongful termination suit against San Joaquin County, asserting that she was fired from the Clerk of the Board's Office in retaliation for perceived whistleblowing. Specifically, Pizano argued that she was fired because her supervisor, Clerk of the Board Lois Sahyoun, erroneously believed that Pizano had filed a complaint with the grand jury relating to improper hiring procedures in the office, which implicated Sahyoun. Shortly after the grand jury determined that Sahyoun had not committed misconduct, Pizano was terminated for allegedly pretextual reasons.

Result

Following denial of a motion for summary judgment which was heard on Sept. 20, 2012 as to Pizano's cause of action for perceived whistleblowing and other claims, the parties participated in private mediation on Oct. 25, 2012, at which time they settled the case for $252,500.
