Facts

The State of California sued Walgreen Co. for illegally dumping hazardous waste. The State's investigation discovered pesticide, bleach, paint, pharmaceutical waste and other items left at Walgreens' trash bins. The stores were also accused of unlawfully disposing of customer records that contained confidential medical information.

Walgreens did not acknowledge any wrongdoing and maintained that its practice was to ship all hazardous materials to a hazardous waste disposal facility, where they are then incinerated.

Result

Without admitting fault, Walgreen agreed to settle the matter for $16.57 million.
