Facts
The decedent, a 49-year-old mother of two, was admitted to Kaiser Baldwin Park on May 23, 2001. She was diagnosed with a lung abscess. She was placed in the ICU and treated. She also went into renal failure. During this admission, she developed decubitus ulcers on her back and buttocks. The patient was treated and discharged to a skilled nursing facility on June 19, 2001. The patient was taken off dialysis. The patient suffered from a low albumin level and fungal infection. She was returned to Kaiser on July 16, 2001 for treatment of the fungal infection. The patient was discharged after two weeks to a skilled nursing facility, for continued treatment. The patient returned to Kaiser on Aug. 28 2001 with bloody vomit. By then the decubitus ulcers were noted to be at Stage IV and measured 16X6 cm with foul smell. The patient expired on Sep. 13, 2001 from a pulmonary embolus.
