Facts

Janet Anderson, Roy Anderson, Joseph Preti, Arnie Pike, and Marilynn Pike sued the Los Angeles Convention and Exhibition Center Authority and the City of Los Angeles, involving allegations of disability discrimination.

Contentions

PLAINTIFFS' CONTENTIONS:
Plaintiffs were disabled persons who used either a walker and/or a wheelchair to move about. Plaintiffs attended the "Abilities Expo" at the Convention Center on or about Feb. 28, 2014 through March 2, 2014, and encountered barriers that prevented them from fully using and enjoying defendants' facilities, programs, and services. Plaintiffs contended, among other things, that the facility lacked accessible restrooms for persons with disabilities or lacked accessible family restrooms that would facilitate assistance to a disabled person. Plaintiffs also encountered access-related barriers in the parking and entrance to the facility. In this lawsuit, plaintiffs asserted causes of action for violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act, California Government Code Section 11135 et seq., Government Code Section 4450 et seq., and Disabled Persons Act under California Civil Code Section 54.1 et seq.

DEFENDANTS' CONTENTIONS:
Defendants denied the allegations and asserted various affirmative defenses.

Result

The city agreed to settle the dispute for $21,500.
