Facts

A lawsuit was filed by disability rights advocates against the City and County of Los Angeles and other defendants alleging defendants had failed to address the needs of people with disabilities in all aspects of large scale emergency planning (e.g. natural disaster or terrorist attack), leaving approximately 500,000 disabled residents at "extreme and unacceptable risk" of harm in an event of a crisis.

Result

A federal judge required the city to hire a consultant to review and revise its plan to address the needs of disabled residents. The city council agreed to pay $2.1 million in legal fees to date to Disability Rights Advocates.
