Facts
From 1982 until January 1994, plaintiff Jacqueline Byrne, a 51-year-old marketing support employee, was employed by the defendant Storage Technology Corporation (STC). In January 1993, the plaintiff heard a rumor that she and another woman would be laid off from their department of about 30 people. The plaintiff complained to STRC's human resources department claiming gender discrimination. In response, STC froze the layoffs, pending an investigation. The defendant transferred the plaintiff to another department, and in January 1994, she was laid off of her new job. The plaintiff brought this action against the defendant based on retaliation for opposing discriminatory employment practices.
Settlement Discussions
The plaintiff made a settlement demand for $150,000. The defendant made a settlement offer of $37,500 that was later withdrawn.
Damages
The palintiff asked for $189,300 in backpay and benefits as well as damages for emotional distress.
Other Information
The verdict was reached approximately two years and six months after the case was filed. A settlement conference was held before U.S. Magistrate Judge Abram. It did not resolve the matter.
