Facts
Plaintiff Henry Meadows was incarcerated at California State Prison, Sacramento (CSP-Sac) on March 7, 2007. Correctional Officer Tracey Hayes was escorting Meadows from the law library to another part of the facility, when an altercation occurred between the two.
Meadows filed suit against Hayes, alleging that the officer violated his Eight Amendment right to be free from excessive force.
Contentions
PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS:
Meadows contended that Hayes assaulted him while he was in handcuffs and leg restaints.
DEFENDANT'S CONTENTIONS:
Hayes contended that during the escort, Meadows repeatedly slowed down to talk to other inmates, in violation of prison regulations, and when Hayes instructed him to stop, Meadows made a verbal threat to him. Hayes stated that when they got closer to Meadows' cell block, Meadows stopped and refused to move. Hayes contended that he and other officers restrained Meadows in response. Hayes contended the force used was appropriate and Meadows was issued a rule violation report for attempted battery on a peace officer.
Damages
Meadows sought damages for pain and suffering and mental anguish, as well as punitive damages.
Injuries
Meadows claimed he suffered head, chest, and knee injuries resulting from having been slammed down and sustaining a blow to his head.
Result
The jury rendered a verdict for the defense.
