Vicki Tragos was shopping at an IKEA store on Jan. 12, 2008 when she slipped and fell while in the cafeteria area.

CLAIMANT'S CONTENTIONS:
Tragos filed suit against IKEA California LLC, as well as the cleaning company hired for the store, Federal Cleaning Contractors Inc., alleging premises liability. She contended IKEA and Federal Cleaning created a dangerous condition and were negligent in maintaining the area. Tragos further alleged the liquid substance she slipped on was the store's meatball sauce, and that no cleaning personnel had been in the dining area at the time.

RESPONDENT'S CONTENTIONS:
IKEA contended that the substance was not their meatball sauce, but rather a clear liquid. Federal Cleaning also alleged that there was an employee in the area at the time of the incident, and constantly monitoring the area.

Damages

Tragos sought $18,006 in damages for past medical costs as well as $10,000 in future medical costs.

Injuries

Tragos claimed she suffered a torn lateral meniscus of her left knee as well as soft-tissue injuries to her back and neck.

Result

The arbitrator awarded Tragos $56,506 in damages.
