Facts

In 2011, the government allowed the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians to conduct gaming in an unincorporated portion of Madera County. The U.S. Dept. of the Interior then acquired a 305-acre parcel of land in trust on behalf of the tribe. Plaintiffs, Stand Up for California and several other concerned citizens and community groups challenged the project, seeking an injunction. The matter was consolidated with another lawsuit filed by the Picayune Rancheria of the Chukchansi Indians, which operated another casino 30 miles away from the Madera site.

Result

U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell denied the injunction request paving the way for the casino plans to continue.
