Facts

From November 1977 to May 1994, plaintiff Mary Fields, a 44-year-old manager, was employed in the indexing department of the defendant company. From October 1977 to May 1994 Patricia Yancey, a 43-year-old manager, was also employed in the defendant's indexing department. Plaintiff Laura Dorricott, a 48-year-old lexicographer, was employed by the defendant from August 1987 to May 1994. On May 13, 1994, the plaintiffs were informed that their employment had been terminated. The plaintiffs brought this action against the defendant company and its affiliate based on violation of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, breach of implied contract and promissory estoppel theories of recovery.

Settlement Discussions

The plaintiffs made a settlement demand for $1.2 million. The defendants made a settlement offer of $30,000.

Damages

The plaintiffs asked for back pay and front pay in the amount of $1.6 to $1.8 million (per the plaintiffs) or $7 million (per the defendants).

Other Information

The verdict was reached approximately two years and three months after the case was filed. A mediation was held in August 1996 before Judge Jim Carrigan, retired, of Judicial Arbiter Group. It did not resolve the matter. The judge dismissed the plaintiff's ADEA and promissory estoppel claims at the close of the plaintiffs' case.
