Facts
Plaintiffs were tenants at the Bridge Motel in San Francisco. The motel was owned by defendant Vyomesh Patel and other entities. Plaintiffs filed a class action lawsuit against defendants claiming the motel was uninhabitable.
Contentions
PLAINTIFFS' CONTENTIONS:
Plaintiffs claimed that the motel had many defective conditions that defendants had knowledge of and failed to correct including insufficient trash receptacles, faulty plumbing, pest infestation, inadequate fire protection and faulty electrical systems and wiring.
Result
The plaintiffs settled with defendants for $1,350,000 to be paid by defendants' insurers. Class representatives received an additional $17,500. Attorney fees were approved at $450,000; $73,936 were awarded for past costs; and $30,000 were awarded for costs in administering the settlement.
