Plaintiff Sandy Castle was employed as a Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks senior clerk typist since May 28, 2006. Defendant Louis Loomis was her supervisor during her employment. Castle filed a claim with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing against Loomis and Los Angeles for numerous discrimination and harassment claims and negligent hiring/supervision.
Contentions
PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS:
Castle claimed that Loomis subjected her to severe and pervasive harassment, discrimination, and - after complaining of his behavior – retaliation, all on the basis of gender, sexual orientation, and religion.
Damages
Castle claimed compensatory and punitive damage against Loomis.
Injuries
Castle claimed emotional distress.
Result
The city of Los Angeles settled with Castle for $100,000. Additionally, Castle was placed on paid administrative leave for one year, with full benefits and retirement accrual.
