Facts

In 1999, Armida Campos gave birth to her daughter at University Medical Center (UMC). Dr. Farooq Abdullah ordered a newborn screening blood test, which revealed that the infant was suffering from decreasing levels of thyroid hormone and that her thyroid was not functioning well. The infant failed to thrive because of her thyroid's failure resulting in small physical stature and brain damage.

Campos sued the hospital and several doctors for violating constitutional rights and for negligence.

Result

The parties agreed to settle the matter for $300,000.
