Facts
Guzik Technical Enterprises Inc. sued Western Digital Corp. for patent infringement.
Contentions
PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS:
Guzik held patents to hard drive disk test components. Guzik sold hard drive testers to Read-Rite Corp., which was later acquired by Western Digital. Western Digital continued to use Guzik's testers, but Guzik claimed that Read-Rite and Western Digital were both subject to agreements that prohibited them from reverse engineering those testers.
Guzik claimed that Western Digital later violated those agreements and infringed on its various patents.
DEFENDANT'S CONTENTIONS:
Western Digital argued that the patents were invalid, and that they had not infringed on them. Western Digital also moved for summary judgment, on the grounds that Guzik's patents were invalid.
Result
The court granted partial summary judgment for Western Digital, finding that some of the claims, over one of Guzik's patents, was invalid and that Western Digital had not infringed on two other claims. However, the court deferred ruling on whether Western Digital had infringed on the remaining claims of Guzik's patents.
