Settlement –  $200,000

Court

L.A. Superior Glendale

Attorneys

Plaintiff

Robert E. Racine

Defendant

Michael J. Garcia

Facts

In 2007, Edith Fuentes' job functions were reduced and in 2011 she was demoted from planning administrator to planner, resulting in an almost 30 percent drop in salary. She filed suit claiming that her demotion had been based on discrimination and insider politics. The city argued that her quality of work had been declining and an audit of her work showed 10 cases in which she had demonstrated a lack of understanding of permit requirements and held inappropriate meetings with clients.

Result

The parties settled. Glendale agreed to allow Fuentes to retire at her highest salary level. Fuentes agreed to take a paid leave and then retire, and she will also receive $200,000 immediately.
