Facts
Adrea LLC filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Barnes & Noble Inc., BarnesandNoble.com LLC, and Nook Media LLC in connection with Nook Devices.
Contentions
PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS:
Plaintiff asserted ownership rights to certain patents concerning electronic book security and copyright systems. The asserted patents were entitled "Electronic Book Security and Copyright Protection System," "Electronic Book Selection and Delivery System Having Encryption and Security Features," and "Topical Service Provides Context Information for a Home Network." Plaintiff alleged defendants' Nook Devices infringed on its patents.
DEFENDANTS' CONTENTIONS:
Defendants denied plaintiff's allegations, and asserted various affirmative defenses. Defendants also filed a counter-claim for non-infringement of the asserted patents, and invalidity.
Result
The jury found that defendants infringed two of the three asserted patents, and awarded Adrea $1.33 million in compensatory damages. The jury rejected defendant's claims for invalidity with respect to the two infringed patents. The jury's verdict did not address the validity of the third patent.
