Facts
Decedent Peter Galassi had a career as a civilian marine machinist and maintenance manager for the U.S. Navy from 1963 to the 1980's. He maintained, repaired, and overhauled pumps, valves, and mechanical systems within naval steam propulsion systems for the Navy. He developed malignant mesothelioma and died in July 2005. His family brought suit against several defendants for asbestos exposure. The trial proceeded to verdict against defendant John Crane Inc. only.
Contentions
PLAINTIFFS' CONTENTIONS:
Plaintiffs contended that decedent was exposed daily to asbestos while aboard U.S. Navy ships working on various asbestos-containing pumps, valves, flanges, gaskets, packing, and insulation.
Injuries
The plaintiffs claimed pleural malignant mesothelioma and death.
Result
The jury returned total award for $2,325,872 to plaintiffs, $325,872 of which was for economic damages, and $2 million for non-economic damages. The jury assigned defendant John Crane Inc. 2 percent liability.
