PLAINTIFFS' CONTENTIONS:
Defendants allegedly increased tenants' rents in violation of California law and local ordinances. Some plaintiffs also alleged habitability claims.

DEFENDANTS' CONTENTIONS:
Defendants denied any wrongdoing.

Result

The parties reached a global settlement, which was preliminarily approved, in which Essex agreed to pay $665,000 in total maximum settlement. Eligible class claimants may receive and average of $449 in relief per household.
