Facts

In 2007, defendant Kristen Santoyo, a teacher's aide at Camarillo High School, was seen on video taking $5 in lunch money from Megan Spitzer, an autistic student who was unable to speak. After Spitzer had been coming home from school upset and hungry, her parents contacted police to investigate what was happening at school. Santoyo pleaded guilty to stealing Spitzer's lunch money for 57 days, and was sentenced to 180 days in jail. Snatoyo admitted to being under the influence of methamphetamine when she committed the thefts and to using the drug for approximately one year prior.

Result

The jury found that the district was negligent and awarded Spitzer $5,700.
