Facts

Plaintiff LAPD motorcycle officer Richard Joaquin had been engaged in an ongoing dispute with his supervisor, when clocked out five minutes early one day in 2005. He was subsequently fired. The police Internal Affairs investigation and a high level review board sided with Joaquin's superior and upheld his dismissal.

Contentions

PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS:
Joaquin argued that the LAPD had retaliated against him when he filed complaints against the supervisor. He contended that this was a continuation of the harassment Joaquin alleged he had experienced for a year prior to his dismissal.

Result

The jury awarded Joaquin $2 million and he was reinstated with back pay.
