Facts

The San Diego District Attorney's Office separately sued Scripps Health and Sharp Memorial hospitals for improper handling, transporting, and storing of medical waste at their facilities and at the city's landfill. County officials found multiple violations, which included unlawful disposal of medical and/or hazardous wastes, including blood and tissue and other violations.

Result

Both hospitals agreed to settle the matter and agreed to adhere to proper waste disposal practices. Scripps agreed to pay $272,870 in civil penalties and costs, while Sharp agreed to pay $102,939. Scripps also agreed to contribute $16,000 toward the purchase of equipment for use by City of San Diego officials at its landfill.
