CEI Enterprises Inc., Patricia D. Cornwell and Staci Gruber v. Anchin, Block & Anchin LLP
Published: Mar. 2, 2013 | Result Date: Feb. 19, 2013 | Filing Date: Jan. 1, 1900 |Case number: 1:2009-cv-11708 Verdict – $50,900,000
Facts
Patricia Cornwell, author of a popular series of books, sued her former financial management company, Anchin, Block & Anchin and principal Evan Snapper for professional negligence and breach of fiduciary duty. Cornwell alleged that she became concerned when her net worth reportedly remained almost stagnant during Anchin's four and a half year stint as her concierge business managers, such that her net worth was only the equivalent of one year of her net income. Cornwell accused the firm of mismanaging her investments, her income tax filings, and her real estate. Furthermore, she alleged that Anchin falsely accused her of violating campaign finance laws, resulting in an FBI investigation that resulted in conviction of Snapper and no charges against Cornwell.
The firm countered by arguing that Cornwell's lavish lifestyle and difficult economic times were responsible for her financial situation.
Result
The jury ruled in favor of Cornwell on all counts and awarded her $50.9 million.
