Facts
Two developmentally disabled men suffered from several ailments, including schizophrenia, autism, severe anxiety, and functional illiteracy. One of the men had his SSI benefits reduced to $0 by the Social Security Administration because he was not informed that he could deduct disability-related training expenses from his income. The second man was disqualified from receiving benefits for seven years due to incorrect agency review of his past income from prior jobs. The two men filed suit against the Administration, seeking injunctive relief under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
Result
Defendant agreed to meet with a professional or family member of the plaintiffs' choice to discuss communicating with them. Defendant agreed to assign a staff expert for each plaintiff to explain the benefits process. Further, defendant will pay $900,000 in attorney fees.
