Facts

The People of the State of California filed a civil environmental prosecution case against 7-Eleven Inc., alleging violation of the underground storage tank (UST) laws and engaging in unfair business practices.

The Ventura County Environmental Health Dept.'s investigation found that a 7-Eleven service station in Camarillo had installed clamps that led to sensors that monitor sumps. The sensors were tampered with and improperly disabled an automatic leak detection system. This happened while 7-Eleven was already under a statewide injunction for failure to comply with certain UST provisions, including laws designed to prohibit tampering. 7-Eleven denied any wrongdoing.

Result

Without admitting liability, 7-Eleven agreed to remedy any violations and ensure compliance. In addition, 7-Eleven agreed to pay $266,684 in civil penalties and costs.
