Plaintiff began employment as a deputy public defender of Nevada County in January, 1998. She was the first
woman to serve as an attorney in that county office. At the time of her employment, the office had five other
deputies and long-time head Public Defender Richard Campbell.
In July, 1999, Plaintiff took an unpaid stress leave and her employment ended in December of the same year
without her having returned to active work. Campbell was terminated in late October, 1999, after the
California Public Defenders Assn. issued a negative evaluation of the public defenders office.
He was replaced by an interim head of the office who served until April, 2000.
Damages
Plaintiff sought damages for emotional distress and economic damages for lost wages and lost public employee retirement benefits.
