Facts
Lawrence Anderson sued the County of Santa Barbara after being injured in an accident.
Contentions
PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS:
Anderson claimed that on July 18, 2012, he was riding a bicycle on the road. When he approached a construction site, he was directed by a worker to bike off the roadway and onto the road's shoulder. When he did so, he fell and injured himself.
Anderson argued that the county caused his injuries, because they did not establish a lane where traffic could safely cross through the area.
DEFENDANT'S CONTENTIONS:
The county denied Anderson's claims, arguing that the true cause of the accident was Anderson's decision to try riding a bicycle through a busy maintenance work zone. Anderson ignored signs informing him that the road was closed, and continued on despite the risk.
Damages
Anderson requested $385,872 in damages.
Result
The jury ruled in favor of the county.
